There are many sides fighting to influence our world view

We need to listen to all of them (free speech)

Including what the mainstream media refuses to cover

The Amphiist defends the views of the oppressed

Amphiist is a Greek word meaning looking at both sides

The mainstream media defends Muslims to a degree. The media encourages migrants from Middle Eastern countries to enter Europe, for example, and offers them benefits. Perhaps this is a way to offer some sort of reparations for the colonialism and imperialism of the past. Or perhaps there is a more sinister agenda in the hearts of the former oppressors. Of course, an argument can be made that the Muslims as a whole are still victims of systemic discrimination and prejudice. There are certainly an enormous number of Islamophobes in the world. For the next week or so, Amphiist will look at the Quran and ask what Islam really teaches.

The Other Side

In the second chapter of the Quran, the word ‘usury’ comes up. If you are not Muslim, please read Chapter 2 of the Quran, especially this area, 2:279, so you can see the glorious mindset that is displays. People should not charge interest on any loan. In fact, they should give it as charity.

If a loan is arranged between two people, there should be two witnesses. If two men are not able to be found, then one man and two women is permissible. Of course, this raises the point of why two women = one man. It is explained in the Quran that in this case, this is so, if one of the women makes a mistake regarding the terms of the loan, the other can correct her. It is not meant as a disparagement of women in any sense, and throughout the Quran, there are many verses which clearly demonstrate how women, in their own roles, are respected and admired. Context is important.

I know Muslims who really live this. One time, one of my students was out of the country and he needed his friend to send me money. His friend took the money for himself, rather than pay me. My student paid me anyway, which meant that he ended up paying double. And guess what? My student said he forgave his friend, because maybe he really needed the money. God is not always in Heaven; sometimes He appears through His followers on earth.
