Dr. Jerald F. Dirks, a Christian scholar who graduated from Harvard Divinity School, says that Christianity did not exist at the time Jesus Christ lived. Jesus was a Muslim because the word ‘Muslim’ means someone who submits or surrenders to God. Jesus submitted to God; therefore, He was a Muslim, according to Dr. Dirks. A person might argue that Islam didn’t exist until 600 AD; however, Muslims point out that the Prophet Muhammad did not start Islam; he brought it to a close. According to this line of thought, Jesus was a Muslim even though from an ethnic standpoint, he was Jewish. Islam is a frame of mind, a moral standpoint, rather than a religion, so according to this viewpoint, Jesus Christ was a Muslim, Moses was a Muslim, Abraham was a Muslim, even the angels are Muslim.
Robert F. Schedinger has a similar point of view but approaches the subject differently. He says that Jesus was a Muslim because Islam is not a religion; it is a social justice movement. According to this rationale, since Jesus was a fighter for social justice, in this sense He was a Muslim.
