The above picture shows just how much Neil Heslin has aged in the short space of time between when the picture with his little boy was taken, and how he appears now. This is evidence, circumstantial though it is, that there was not a conspiracy concerning Newtown and Sandy Hook Elementary School. People can be actors, but they can’t or wouldn’t age ten years in appearance in that short of a time. I’m not sure when the first picture was taken, but the boy was only six when he died so the picture of father and son together cannot be too old.
The grieving father is petitioning Congress for a ban on assault weapons. Senator Dianne Feinstein has initiated a bill that would implement such a ban. Heslin made it clear that he was not anti-guns or the Second Amendment; he merely, because of the tragedy involving his son, wants to reduce the chance of a similar tragedy happening to another family.
Feinstein’s bill is not going through the political process without opposition. Many Republicans see the bill as an attack on the Second Amendment. Heslin argues that when the Founding Fathers referred to the right to bear arms, assault weapons had never been imagined, and so an assault on such weapons does not constitute an infringement of the Second Amendment.
More specifically, one of the Republicans mentioned in this article stated that he did not support background check for gun ownership. This does not make sense to me personally because if someone is buying a gun and they have nothing to hide, then they have nothing to fear from a background check. Of course, the other side of the story is that criminals are not going to voluntarily submit to background checks, so such checks would take guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens who pose no threat in the first place, but criminals would still possess the weapons.
Another issue is that of mental health. A mentally unhealthy person with an assault weapon is obviously a recipe for disaster. But in a way it seems as though the problem is impossible to solve. As long as there are evil people who think the answer to their problems is massacring dozens of victims, all the laws in the world will not help.
