Amphiist 61: Women’s rights in Islam (spoiler: much more than in the West)

· Religion

There are many sides fighting to influence our world view

We need to listen to all of them (free speech)

Including what the mainstream media refuses to cover

The rest of us are entitled to our perspectives:

The Amphiist defends the views of the oppressed

Amphiist is a Greek word meaning looking at both sides

The mainstream media defends Muslims to a degree. The media encourages migrants from Middle Eastern countries to enter Europe, for example, and offers them benefits. Perhaps this is a way to offer some sort of reparations for the colonialism and imperialism of the past. Or perhaps there is a more sinister agenda in the hearts of the former oppressors. Of course, an argument can be made that the Muslims as a whole are still victims of systemic discrimination and prejudice. There are certainly an enormous number of Islamophobes in the world. For the next week or so, Amphiist will look at the Quran and ask what Islam really teaches.

The Other Side

One of the fundamental challenges to Islam by Islamophobes is women’s rights. Let’s look at Chapter 4 of the Quran. There are two main sections which discuss women. The first discusses inheritance. Women, even 1400 years ago in Islam, as a fundamental tenet of the faith, already had substantial inheritance rights.

On the subjects of sex and marriage, the Quran is equally clear. Women who commit adultery are to be confined to their houses (not stoned) until they die. If they repent (either men or women) they are to be set free. Women cannot be inherited against their will. In the matter of divorce, women must be treated very fairly in a financial way because a covenant has been made. However, if a man does not get along well with his wife, he should not immediately consider divorce, because perhaps God is testing him with a trial that will ultimately benefit him.

Men excel compared to women; however, because of this, they should protect women and guard over them. Women should obey and if they don’t, men have the right and obligation to rebuke them, and if that doesn’t work, deny them sex, and if that doesn’t work, then gently slap them so they get the point, but at no point, actually hurt them (Quran 4:34).
