Amphiist 62: Obligation of Muslims in countries where they’re oppressed

· Religion

There are many sides fighting to influence our world view

We need to listen to all of them (free speech)

Including what the mainstream media refuses to cover

The rest of us are entitled to our perspectives:

The Amphiist defends the views of the oppressed

Amphiist is a Greek word meaning looking at both sides

The mainstream media defends Muslims to a degree. The media encourages migrants from Middle Eastern countries to enter Europe, for example, and offers them benefits. Perhaps this is a way to offer some sort of reparations for the colonialism and imperialism of the past. Or perhaps there is a more sinister agenda in the hearts of the former oppressors. Of course, an argument can be made that the Muslims as a whole are still victims of systemic discrimination and prejudice. There are certainly an enormous number of Islamophobes in the world. For the next week or so, Amphiist will look at the Quran and ask what Islam really teaches.

The Other Side

In Quran 4:100, it says that Muslims who are being oppressed in one country have different countries that they have a duty and obligation to move to a land where Islam is honoured.

I may be wrong, but this seems to me that Muslims who are being oppressed in a certain country, do not have the obligation or duty to fight the non-Muslims (or oppressing Muslims) there in that land. They should leave and go somewhere where they are actually appreciated, and where they will not be oppressed. A practical example these days would be not to complain about oppression in Britain, the US or Canada, but instead to go to Saudi Arabia, where they can truly live their religion (or Iran, for example).

This is basically for men. Women and children are under no obligation to travel to a country where Islam is practiced, although if they wish to, then they are certainly allowed. Always in Islam, women are protected.

The most important implication for this is that ISIS has no legitimacy when they state that the Muslim duty is to fight the disbelievers. In the Quran, it clearly states that it is better to practice self-restraint and self-discipline (also patience), but that if it is a matter of self-defence, then fighting is permissible.
